Savile Row is a London street in Mayfair that hides a fascinating history! It has an unrivalled reputation in the world, and is the reference in terms of made-to-measure men's suits. Anderson & Sheppard, Gieves & Hawkes, Henry Poole...the big names are numerous and have been prospering there for centuries!
THE STORY OF A MYTH
Tailors like Henry Poole began to set up shop in Savile Row in the late 18th century, in an area frequented by London's high society. Their clientele included royalty, statesmen, and theatrical and literary luminaries.
The costumes of the time were mainly military or intended for sports, during weekends in the country for example. Gieves and Hawks, two companies that prospered during the 19th and 20th centuries as the main tailors for the Royal Navy and the army, are remembered from this period. The expansion of the British Empire brought them worldwide fame, and they later merged under the name Gieves and Hawks.
In the 20th century, the modern suit was born and became the norm. Despite some difficulties in the period between the two wars, the tailors of Savile Row knew a revival of popularity in the 60s. Since then, they have continued to work tirelessly in search of sartorial perfection and to this day the street retains its mythical reputation.
A UNIQUE KNOW-HOW
Today, there are about 40 stores in which a hundred tailors work. Every year, nearly 7000 suits are made for Hollywood stars, sports stars and members of the royal family.
The made-to-measure suit requires a very precise know-how. From the choice of fabric to the complex realization of a jacket, the making of a single suit can require up to 24 hours of work and a dozen people.
Savile Row embodies this art and know-how like nowhere else, and that's why this street of tailors continues to fascinate!
OUR PASSION FOR KNOW-HOW
We are happy to transpose this know-how to women, and to work on the cut of the traditional men's suit to adapt it to women's proportions. We are very proud to accompany more and more women in their professional and personal lives, and we would like to thank you for your support and for all your positive feedback!
